Just after leaving the city proper from the southern end of Anna Salai, you will see a small hill which in the first decades of the 16th century, the Portuguese learned was the traditionally believed to be dwelling place of the Apostle Thomas. In 1711, a church was built there on the site of a shrine originally erected by a Portuguese in 1551. A new church, circular in shape, was also built in 1971, which was believed to be the 1900th anniversary of the Saint’s martyrdom. Close to the old church is the cave in which St.Thomas is said to have lived. Near the cave is a small opening in the hill and by it, is a palm print said to be that of St. Thomas, tied towards St.Thomas Mount to escape his assassins.
